This paper presents a virtual reality (VR) based vehicle driving simulator. VR hardware consists of five parts: VR helmet, computers, steering wheel and shift lever, gesture recognition system, and motion system. To improve convenience, a gesture recognition technology is employed. The video of a user’s gestures is captured via camera and the meaning of gestures is recognized by an algorithm. The output results are used to control 3D models of hands in virtual scenes which are avatars of user’s real hands. In virtual traffic environment, normal traffic flow and traffic accidents are simulated. Additionally, a playback function is provided for observing the whole virtual driving process. The architecture of the system is introduced and related algorithms are represented in this paper. Tests show that the VR simulator can provide a more realistic driving experience and it can be used for training, traffic safety education, and related scientific research experiments.
