The establishment needs to investigate the supply chain variables and freight trip activity to understand its impact on the freight system. With Tiruchirappalli as a study city, an Establishment-Based Freight Survey (EBFS) was conducted in the pure receiver establishments, resulting in 212 samples. The supply chain variables were categorized into three groups: establishment, commodity, and delivery characteristics, to understand micro-level freight trip activity in the urban area. Dataset was cleaned, and the descriptive statistics analysis was performed. Then the relationship between freight trip activity and supply chain characteristics was statistically investigated. Freight trip generation (FTG) models were developed to explain the urban freight trip activity using ordinary least square (OLS) and soft computing methods. The suitable FTG model, which provides accurate and better results, was identified. Recommendations and practical implications were presented to solve urban freight system problems, transforming into a sustainable city.
