This paper addresses serviceability aspects unique to railroad bridge design and evaluation. Emphasis is put on the effects of steel bridge deterioration due to wear, fatigue and corrosion, and timber trestle deterioration on the serviceability criteria for railroad bridges. Serviceability considerations with respect to extreme events such as earthquakes are also discussed.
