The Highway Safety Manual (HSM) provides various safety performance functions (SPFs) and crash modification factors (CMFs) for different types of facilities to predict the expected crash frequency. Since the predictive models were developed using crash data from a few select states, calibration needs to be done for these models so that the accuracy of the prediction is increased. The objective of this study was to determine if the HSM predictive model predicts crashes at 4-leg signalized intersections (4SG) in urban and suburban areas in the state of Kansas accurately and calculate the calibration factor. A total of 198 4SG intersections were selected and crash data from 2013 to 2015 were used in the calibration process. Considering total crashes, a calibration factor of 1.174 was estimated and a calibration factor of 2.009 was estimated when considering fatal and injury (FI) crashes. In both the cases, the calibration factor was greater than 1.000, implying that the HSM predictive methodology underpredicted the number of crashes at 4SG in Kansas.
