Focusing on the intersections of Beijing's central urban area, the paper studies the traffic facilities, motor vehicles volume, pedestrian volume, pedestrian traffic conflict, pedestrian traffic law violation rates and carries out survey. Based on extensive survey data and historical traffic data, the paper proofs that the major factor leading to the pedestrian traffic conflicts is pedestrian violation of the traffic law, followed by lack of reasonable facilities crossing the streets. According to the causes of the traffic accidents, the paper puts forward appropriate measures to improve pedestrian safety, including improving pedestrian traffic compliance rate, adding more crossing streets facilities for pedestrian. For quantitative evaluation of pedestrian safety, pedestrian traffic conflict evaluation model at urban road intersections should be established, and the model parameters should be calibrated. The result of this paper has an important significance for easing traffic congestions in big cities, and improving traffic safety.
