Traffic safety for truck drivers is vital to overall road safety, especially in complex traffic conditions. This study examined the driving behavior of truck drivers under distracted conditions, focusing on phone use, rubbernecking, and using a high-fidelity driving simulator and eye-tracking technology. Simulating a segment of the I-695 highway in Baltimore City, the study involved 40 participants navigating mild and heavy traffic scenarios. The study assessed reaction times, speed, braking, and lateral lane positioning during phone calls, as well as changes in eye movements, speed, braking events, and lane displacement during rubbernecking. This study revealed that, in both mild and heavy scenarios, male drivers are more likely to increase their speed, while female drivers tend to decrease their speed. A significant percentage of participants preferred to tilt toward the right lane, and braking behavior showed a notable reduction in both frequency and severity, indicating a preference for steady driving during distractions.
