Object and purpose of research. This paper discusses multi-stage frequency converters in electric propulsion systems of the ships fitted with Integrated Electric Propulsion System (IEPS). The purpose is to justify the advantages of multi-stage frequency converters and benefits of their application in heavy-duty electric propulsion systems of ships with main circuit voltage over 1 kV. Materials and methods. The tasks were solved through common approaches followed for AC and DC machines and semi-conducting converters, as well as through mathematical simulation and other tools. Main results. Development of the mathematical model simulating electric propulsion system of IEPS ship based on multi-stage frequency converter. The study also investigated adverse effects of this converter upon voltage quality in ship grid, comparing analytical results versus test data. Conclusion. The authors point out high quality of output voltage and current achieved by the frequency converter as part of electric propulsion system in the entire load band, as well as high quality of grid current and low, less than 3.0%, shape distortion coefficient of grid voltage THD curve. These results confirm practicability of multi-staged frequency converters in heavy-duty (up to 15 MW) electric propulsion systems of ships.
