[Objective] Abnormal arcing and burning of contact wire are commonly observed in urban rail transit vehicle bases, primarily concentrated in pantograph-corresponding areas at train parking lots. Minor cases can reduce the smoothness of PC (pantograph-catenary) operation, causing tripping and other contact network operational malfunctions, while severe cases may lead to serious PC accidents such as contact wire breakage. To ensure the reliability of catenary equipment, the PC system operational safety and train operational stability, it is crucial to adopt effective measures to address abnormal arcing and burning in PC system in vehicle bases. [Method] Taking the catenary arcing and burning incidents in the parking garage of Hangtou Depot on Shanghai Rail Transit Line 18 after putting into use as an example, the causes of abnormal arcing and burning in PC system are investigated from multiple aspects: the contact condition between pantograph slider and contact wire, pantograph lifting height and pressure, pantograph current-carrying capacity, temperature at the contact points between pantograph and catenary, and pantograph input current. Countermeasures are proposed based on these investigations. The traction system software of the 18A01 train model on Line 18 is optimized, and repeated pantograph lifting and lowering tests are conducted in the parking garage to validate the effectiveness before and after the software optimization. [Result & Conclusion] The root cause of the arcing and burning phenomenon in Line 18 Hangtou Depot is identified as a timing mismatch between the transition period of PC system entering a stable contact state and the closing delay of the high-speed circuit breaker during the pantograph lifting process. On-site verification and six months of follow-up monitoring demonstrate that the optimized software effectively prevented the occurrence of arcing and burning in the parking garage. No further signs of contact wire burning have appeared in the Hangtou Depot again.
