Hazard of Van Allen belt and solar flare radiations are evaluated for lunar mission; Van Allen belt doses are determined for lunar ascent trajectories and emergency returns therefrom; method of analyzing space vehicle design from point of view of radiation shielding is described; solar flare problem is discussed from probability point of view, and results are integrated with vehicle shielding characteristics to define relationship between radiation safety and weight penalty.
