Landing gear systems having multiple legs, each of which is inverted tripod composed of 3 energy-absorbing struts, are studied; model scaling is related to 3 primary full-scale to model ratios, acceleration, mass, and length; model drop test results correlate satisfactorily with theoretical landing stability curves for models simulating 70-ft-high, 2000-slug vehicle and 18-ft-high, 300-slug vehicle; theoretical model and results of parametric study are given in terms of ground slope, tripodal strut stroke loads, lower/upper strut load ratio, and number of legs; 4-leg system is shown to be best.
