Mariner IV and Lunar Excursion Module are compared to explore items that must be considered during development of structure such as function, form, loads, proportion, and dynamics; environment, mission requirements, and subsystem interfaces are examined to determine extent to which they affect space vehicle structure and to see which elements are influenced by presence of man; it is shown that man is unique payload and, his presence strongly influences payload structure; rest of space vehicle structure is primarily influenced by size requirements and by mission duration.
