Report on study of performance of ships in service, with particular reference to tankers and especially large crude carriers; 15 ships, selected as sample of varying size, trade and nationality, were equipped with improved instrumentation and, in case of three vessels, with data loggers; ship-to-shore system of high-speed data transmission by radio teleprinter was pioneered to transfer data quickly to office, where punched cards feed system of computer programs, etc; it is noted that, although project has met many problems, results have been obtained which show unexpected short-term variations in hull performance.
