Speed ship would achieve on deep water at same shaft horsepower is expressed in terms of its measured speed on shallow water, its immersed midship section area and quantities derived from model experiments; both flow and wave retardation speed losses are considered; former is empirically treated using trial results for two ships run on both deep and shallow measured mile, and certain results for 47 trials, from British Towing Tank Panel 1962 data for single screw tankers; latter is treated using Schlichting's wave retardation hypothesis; speed on deep water at which ship would have had same resistance is derived and converted to speed which would have been reached at same power.
