Methods presently in use by Penn Central Railroad for draining diesel locomotive engine crankcases are discussed; criteria are believed to be applicable to other types of diesel as well as gasoline engines; typical railroad engine oil is SAE 40 or slightly heavier, has non-zinc 5 to 7% by volume additive package, generally with calcium metal base, and is in 75 VI range; used oil condemning limits recommended by some engine builders and petroleum refiners; analyes of several typical used crankcase oil samples are also presented; effectiveness of blotter spot interpretations and their meaning in evaluating condition of used lubricating oil is pointed out.
