Air-fuel ratio in different cylinders of same engine shown to vary from 11.56 to 16.01; anti-knock rating of fuel in different cars may vary 16 to 18 octane numbers; composition of fuel in different cylinders varies widely, affecting anti-knock ratio; differences in method for heating manifold mixture change air-fuel ratio and knock tendencies; apparatus has been developed for determining spark timing exactly, using neon tube and photographic film drum arrangement; volatility of reference test fuels should approximate that of average commercial gasoline.
