Factor heretofore neglected in calculating effective horsepower for full-sized ship from model tests is power required to accelerate circulating water from rest to ship's velocity; general idea has been to keep projected area small even permitting small amount of cavitation at high speeds, to get higher propeller efficiency at cruising speeds; for reasons given writer believes reverse is true.
