Trend in rear-axle design as exhibited at automobile show in London is discussed; very few worm-geared axles found; hypoid bevel slowly gaining ground; ball and Timken roller bearing equally popular in back axles; two-pinion differentials are almost standard; axle casings nearly always of pressed steel; no sign of any definite tendency on question of torque tubes versus Hotchkiss drives; practice of dividing long transmission shaft into two parts where torque tube is used is very common on Continental cars.
