During last two years life of air-cooled engines used in Navy has approximately doubled; methods employed by Navy at North Island Naval Air Station, San Diego, in rebuilding and repairing 400 Wasp and Hornet engines; any engine is rejected for installation if out-of-line motion of crankshaft exceeds 0.0003-in. at extreme propeller end; if compression of any cylinder varies 5 lb. from set standard, engine is returned for further work; if vibration develops on test stand investigation is continued until trouble is eliminated.
