Paper presents estimate of power plant needs for future Navy V/STOL aircraft; helicopters, propeller powered, and jet powered type V/ STOL aircraft are considered; comparison of weights and specific fuel consumptions of types of propulsion systems, namely, lift fan, deflected thrust cruise engine (turbofan), lift turbojet and lift turbofan; aircraft considerations affecting engine design include engine installation, attitude control, and thrust capability; it is found that development of nominal 10,000-lb turbofan lift engine, 7000-lb and 10,000-lb military thrust lift-cruise turbofan engine is needed.
