Advent of nuclear powered submarine alters ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) problem and sets new requirements for ASW vehicles; performance of surface ships, submarines, hydrofoils, and ground effect machines is shown to be determined by specific weight of power plant; available light weight marine power plants and prospects for future; development of marine version of J-57 jet engine, designated P and WA FT-4A engine, its performance and characteristics; use of gas turbine with high temperature reactor offers promise of low specific weight nuclear power plant which permits design of ships capable of continuous, very high speed.
