Bell Aerosystems' practical experience of equipping Lake LA-4 aircraft with air cushion landing gear led to system concept of gear, designed to replace wheel gear; capability and equipment requirements for typical civil transport application are defined; features of air cushion gear important in civil applications are safety, cross wind capability, and amphibious performance without weight and drag penalty, with water-to-land transition at speed; of paramount importance is aircraft payload/gross weight ratio by use of air cushion landing gear is made; future development possibilities are indicated.
