Janus concept comprises blunt, lifting body re-entry vehicle with its upper surface formed largely by deltawing aircraft; lifting body furnishes large volume in spacecraft for orbital operations, serves as re-entry heat shield, and provides aerodynamic maneuver capability; after re-entry heating and loading period, aircraft is separated from "pod" at subsonic speed and proceeds to landing site; abort capability is provided; preliminary sizing of spacecraft for 2-wk, low-altitude orbit mission with three-man crew, yields overall length of 27 ft, span of 16 ft, depth of 10 ft, and useful payload volume of 860 cu ft.
