Entries from altitudes greater than 350,000 ft with X-15 airplane have provided piloting experience and verification of predicted control characteristics and operational techniques; airplane re-enters as glider and duplicates several phases in recovery of higher-performance vehicles, for example, transition from near-zero dynamic pressure to aerodynamic flight, and terminal-area ranging and landing; some control-system requirements for lifting entry are suggested; other contributions to entry technology, terminal guidance, simulation, approach and landing, and aerodynamic heating are presented.
