New design, conceived at Mechanical Engineering Dept, University College, Dublin, for two-stroke cycle diesel engine for traction purposes, such as in heavy automotive, earthmoving, and rail car installations is proposed; engine has mechanically driven scavenge blower in series with exhaust gas turbocharger; by driving scavenge blower from crankshaft, through variable speed drive, quantity of charge air supplied to engine can be varied independently of engine speed; very high torque at low engine speed is thus possible, and ideal traction torque characteristic results; experimental work done on single cylinder engine and two 3-cyl engines.
