Two ways of giving conventional aircraft ability to take off and land vertically are explained; current state of art is summed up in Dassault Balzac V 001 (composite system) and Hawker P.1127 (vectored thrust aircraft); 2 aircraft are intended to lead respectively to Dassault Mirage III-V, and Hawker P.1154; both are entrants for NATO BMR-3 specification of VTOL supersonic strike fighter; attempt is made to assess each power concept and major characteristics; reingestion and erosion problems, and safety factor.
