Naval Air Dept of Roy Aircraft Establishment at Bedford has constructed gear for aircraft carrier installation; arresting force is provided by water-pressure in pair of parallel tubes laid little over 80 ft apart; when aircraft engages gear, piston in each tube is drawn rapidly forward, expelling water before it through outlet nozzles in tube crowns; each tube has about 150 nozzles, is 200 ft long and of 3 3/4 in. bore; piston stroke is 188 ft; 1 1/8 in. diam nonrotating wire rope connects pistons.
