Advantages of method developed by Alexander Stephen and Sons in association with Armco, Ltd and British Ship Research Assn are that panels do not need to be turned over, plates do not require tack welding, problem of distortion due to welding does not arise and process will cope with gaps in joint up to tolerance of 0.070 in. without affecting shape or appearance of weld; technique consists of using Armco Idealarc type LT 34 twin-head, tractor, automatic, submerged-arc welding machine, leading arc being d-c and trailing arc a-c, exceptions being that for 3/16 in. and 1/4 in. plates only a-c arc is used.
