Historical notes mention use of electric equipment to drive ship propeller in 1839, and subsequent examples for naval and merchant vessels; at present, electric transmission of power from output shaft of prime mover to input shaft of propeller are constant frequency and variable frequency, a-c systems, and constant voltage, constant current, and variable voltage (Ward-Leonard) d-c systems; prime movers used with electric transmission systems are diesel engines, steam turbines, and recently, gas turbines; propellers are invariably fixed pitch type; components are described.
