Analysis of performance of split-torque or input-coupled hydrostatic transmission by means of mathematical model reveals features which are important to designer and user alike; quality of hydraulic components of transmission has strong effects on performance; split-torque transmission is expected to perform with higher efficiency than straight hydrostatic transmission; value of mathematical model in describing transmission performance for straight hydrostatic transmission and differential transmission is shown; inadequacy of concept of ideal loss-free transmission is emphasized and illustrated.
