Weight reduction designed into highway vehicles can pay off in various ways one of which is hauling of greater payloads within legal weight limits; areas of weight reduction are outlined; relationship of permissible gross weight, vehicle tare weight, and speed requirements influencing horsepower necessities; use of higher strength alloys, of steel plate parts, of aluminum and magnesium and of Fiberglas reinforced plastics is shown by various examples; evolution of truck design; tabulation of approximate comparative costs and weight savings of aluminum and steel cast and fabricated parts.
