Policy, based on principle of decentralization of maintenance by use of area workshops, is followed by Bath area workshops of Bristol Omnibus Co; there are six pits in main workshop with openings guarded by four tubular posts and chains; storage tanks for new and waste oil are located underneath pits; use of total fuel-consumption figures ensures that buses are overhauled at intervals appropriate to their employment and consequent wear and tear; light overhaul, which is largest maintenance operation, deals mainly with engine; cylinder heads are changed for reconditioned ones, pistons are re-ringed, and bearings are examined; body repair and painting.
