Problem of designing wheels for vehicle operation on variety of soil conditions was approached in several ways, with each trying to develop large ground contact area to minimize soil bearing pressure and motion resistance; tracks and large diameter wheels are used to cope with off-road driving conditions; Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp has proposed as off-road locomotion device hybrid design that provides required large soil bearing area and also approaches stability and efficiency of circular spoked wheel; several models of device have been built and tested, latest of which is being developed for U S Army Tank-Automotive Command.
