Concept of ground transportation, designed to meet service flexibility, minimum undesirable effect on surroundings, system flexibility, and evolutionary growth capability is examined; multimodal door-to-door system (MMS) is characterized by use of small, independent vehicle units which are transported at high speeds on exclusive guideways in interurban mode; when off guideways, units are operated as conventional private vehicles in urban or street mode; system incorporates several advanced subsystem concepts, including deterministic control system, functional train headway policy, high speed switching, and unique station layout all of which are described.
