Mission of Saturn I/IB is to qualify S-IVB stage and Instrument Unit for Saturn V applications, verify Apollo spacecraft integrity, and train astronauts in actual manned Apollo flights; present Saturn IB launch vehicle comprises S-IB stage, S-IVB stage, and Instrument Unit stage; S-IB stage and S-IVB stage are propulsion or booster stages; instrument unit houses navigation, guidance and control equipment; primary payloads for which launch vehicle was designed are Command Service Module and Lunar Module; vehicle operations, systems, and functions are described.
