Control and management of experiments and instruments for future space missions are possible by means of spaceborne computers using computer managed laboratory (CML) approach which permits variety of experiments to be performed with same complement of instruments and chemicals; taking advantage of reprogramming capability, instructions can be transmitted from Earth to change planned course of experimental approach, depending upon results obtained from earlier experiments; life-detection simulation experiment has been constructed and operated in CML mode, controlled by IBM 1800 computer.
