Losses from 1949 onwards are analyzed to discover why they show upward trend since 1959; study is made of steel ships of 100 tons gross and upward engaged in normal trade; casualties are grouped under main headings of Wrecked, Foundered, lost by Collision, Burnt (destroyed by fire or explosion); main conclusions are that smaller ships are more vulnerable but their loss percentage has not increased, war-built dry cargo ships have become grave risk, fire in port, especially for oil tankers, is increasing menace, and that case can be made for revision of standards in administration, supervision, command and general manning.
