Satellite propulsion subsystems for providing stationkeeping and attitude control functions may be optimized with respect to system weight requirements by employing colloid microthrusters in intermediate total impulse range between electrothermal and ion thruster capability; on power limited satellites colloid micro-thrusters are particularly attractive; concept of electrostatically spraying liquids from capillary needle tips is described; typical microthruster configurations and missions are compared with other propulsion systems to bring these devices into proper perspective.
