History of variable geometry concept and development in 1949 of Grumman XF10F-1 fighter which did not go into production; as aircraft size and performance continued to increase, problem of catapult capability vs carrier aircraft weight and speed again became apparent; this time, TFX variable geometry wing aircraft was considered more practical solution than further increasing carrier catapult and arresting capabilities; because of similarity of XF10F-1 and TFX concepts, experiences and problems encountered during flight test program of XF10F-1 are discussed which had direct effect on General Dynamics/Grumman design of TFX.
