Report summarizes study of problems associated with landing of manned advanced flight vehicles, ranging from re-entry vehicles to those proposed for hypersonic cruise; study conducted by Lockheed-California Co under direction of Flight Dynamics Laboratory of Aeronautical Systems Div, U S Air Force; means of defining satisfactory configurations developed during investigation are indicated; suitable criterion for determining whether human pilot can supply judgments necessary to make satisfactory landing; criterion can be related to rate of descent at height of 50 ft above touchdown point.
