Paper illustrates applications of Extreme Value Theory to group of engineering reliability problems; importance of largest load, weakest link, largest flaw and shortest life are shown; exact and asymptotic forms of extreme value distributions are developed, using relations of E.J.Gumbel; results are combined with functional theory of reliability to show technique of life prediction needed for reliable design.
