Three-shaft turbofan engines Rolls-Royce RB207 and RB211 were designed to provide transition from approach of "scheduled" overhaul to concept of "on-condition" maintenance for subsonic civil transport aircraft; three-shaft configuration with cruise by-pass ratio of 27 to 1 was adopted; RB211 is essentially proportional scale-down of more powerful engine except that in order to maintain relight altitude its combustion chamber is relatively longer than that of RB207 and there are detail differences between cooled turbine blades.
