Evaluation of special purpose vehicles, commercially developed for operation in adverse terrain, disclosed that U S Army-developed general purpose vehicles outperformed them in almost all tactical environments; component development involves "building block" approach to problem; improved suspension systems, and light weight, compact engines with improved fuel efficiency, permit design of smaller trucks capable of carrying larger loads over greater distances; features of 2 1/2 ton truck XM410 and 5 ton truck XM656, X M561, and GOER vehicles, ranging from 8 to 16 tons.
