Modern motorships have speeds of from 4-5 knots and passenger motor liners of from 20-23 knots greater than was usual some years ago; it is necessary to design machinery which, without sacrificing reliability, will occupy less space per unit of output; single and double-acting engines of 2- and 4-stroke type; increasing engine output.
