Project carried out to exploit technique of launching instrumented probes from guns of large caliber is extension of 1959 High-Altitude Research Program by McGill University, Montreal, together with U S Army Ballistic Research laboratory; launch system succeeded in sending 400-lb rocket-assisted probe, Martlet 3A, to height of 340, 000 ft using 16.4-in. smooth bored ex-naval gun which is installed on Barbados Island; gun serves as first stage booster and is re-usable; modification of gun provides for shot travel of no less than 112 ft; increased muzzle velocity will enhance possibility for launching multi-stage rockets and test vehicles for supersonic combustion ramjets.
