Data recorded during railroad shipment of automobiles were used to determine cause of auto frame damage; it is shown that damage is caused primarily by vertical motions of rail car; these motions were duplicated by relatively simple simulator consisting of tape controlled servo hydraulic rams and platform; simulator reproduces automobile damage experienced on railroad shipments, and has been used to evaluate rapidly different methods of attaching automobiles to rail car; result of study was change in hook design and establishment of tiedown chain angle and preload.
