A history of the use of steel in shipbuilding. The article describes fully the troubles encountered by the British Admiralty in the earlier attempts to build steel ships, the growth of the steel-making industry and the improvement and standardizing of the product. The machinery of the steel mill and its evolution are described. The recognition of the possibilities of steel by the marine engineer led to the greatest triumphs of his profession. (4500 w.)
