First section of planned waterway, extends from Bamberg to Nuremberg and will be completed by 1969-70; section follows partly former Ludwig-Donau-Main canal as well as Regnitz River; it requires greater number of weirs and locks; length, breadth and depth of canal agree with dimensions of standard ship of European waterway-classification IV (1350 ton ship); locks are mainly constructed as locks with water saving basins; four-pump plants provide canal with water; design features are presented.
