Existing clearance between top of rail of Belt Railway tracks, Chicago, and underside of Rock Island bridge was 17 ft 5 in.; additional clearance of 1 ft 10 in. was needed; in structure developed, rails are supported between pairs of wide-flange beams to give depth of 1 ft 5 3/4 in. from top of rail to underside of steel; each rail is carried between two 14-in. 158-lb wide-flange beams with 1 × 14 in. cover plates welded to top and bottom flanges; rail is supported on series of 7 × 9-in. oak blocks 2 ft 4 in. long, which rest on lower flanges of beams; blocks are spaced 12 in. on centers.
