Caribbean was built at Bethlehem Steel Corp's Sparrows Point shipyard for Caribbean Barge Corp, for carriage of sugar from Puerto Rico to East Coast of United States, and will be towed at speeds up to 10 knots; capacity is 776,000 cu ft; length 475 ft, beam 75 ft, depth 35 ft; cargo area is divided into four 99-ft-long bulk cargo holds, serviced by eight centerline hatches; provision has been made to carry other types of cargoes in addition to sugar; vessel can be altered to carry grain, coal, etc.
