Direction handling qualities criteria for instrument approach task in controlled turbulence were determined using airborne V/STOL simulator, and compared with results for visual approach task, to show that instrument flight demanded more stringent criteria; increasing weathercock stability, in turbulence, required larger values of damping; these minimum directional damping levels were determined by aircraft's response to turbulence; existing recommendations for minimum damping levels did not correlate with experimental results, but recommendations for minimum directional response were found to be adequate for normal operation.
